For this social justice poster project, I chose to focus on McDonald's use of prison labor and the 13th amendment.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

This may sound fair, as a way for criminals to pay back society for their crimes. However, BIPOC are disproportionately incarcerated at higher rates than white people in spite of committing the same petty crimes. Essentially, slavery was allowed to continue via the side door of mass incarceration.
I decided to use a somewhat harsh, choppy collage style with the arms cut in a sharp manner. The image floats on a red background as a parallel to McDonald's own advertising.
The process for this design ultimately led me back to the simplicity of my gut feeling that the hands with the McDonalds arches worked best on their own.
